Moroccan artist Farid Belkahia (1934–2014) was a pioneer of modern art in the Maghreb region, forging an abstract language that drew on age-old craft traditions. Eventually giving up painting to work in copper and leather, Belkahia created a unique body of work that played an essential role in grounding modernism within the local context. This book – published to accompany the retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in collaboration with Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art – presents a major survey of Belkahia’s art, with essays by Michel Gauthier, Lina Ramadan, Fatima-Zahra Lakrissa and Kenza Sefrioui.
