This image from the Shahanama, the Persian "Book of Kings", depicts the hero Feridoun on his way to overthrow the evil ruler Zahhak. The manuscript from which it was taken was created under the patronage of the Safavid ruler Shah Tahmasp I (r.1524-1576 AD), who brought together the greatest artists of Persia in order to produce this magnificent work.
