Cardan or otherwise also known as marine compasses were the core instruments that enabled the development and progress of navigation and cartography. This beautiful replica is made by Hemisferium – a Spanish producer specialising in the manufacture of ancient scientific instruments. Marine compasses differed from the regular ones by being mounted in a cardan suspension, resulting in being at a constant level, even if the ship was pitched.
