"Born in Houston in 1981 and now based in Doha, Ryan Joel Browning works across painting, sculpture, and conceptual practice to explore memory, urban landscapes, and the imaginative worlds of digital culture. His paintings draw on the aesthetics of virtual worlds, role-playing games, and everyday objects, often presenting flattened, collage-like compositions where familiar forms are refracted through absence and abstraction. Alongside oils and gouache, he experiments with 3D-printed plastic, ceramics, fibre, and found objects, creating works that blur the boundaries between dimension and fiction.
An Associate Professor at VCUarts Qatar, Browning has exhibited widely through residencies and exhibitions in Doha, including Dual Inspiration (Fire Station, 2018) and Majaz: Contemporary Art Qatar at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in 2022, as well as internationally in galleries across the United States, Russia, and Europe."
