The two-volume Arabic language review of the extensive Islamic coin collection of Qatar Museums is a real treat for all the numismatists out there. Volume two showcases the currencies used by Islamic countries that were independent of or outside the Abbasid Caliphate, as well as later Arabic coins used in subsequent dynasties or nations. The first book meanwhile includes an important group of Arab-Sassanid coins. These were minted by the Arab government in Iran but used designs and inscriptions from the Sassanid era. The Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphate coinages are also illustrated, as are pieces issued by rebel leaders and other dissident groups, including some extremely rare coins by Kharjite leader Qatari ibn al-Fuja’a.
